Primary Connected Curriculum

Where the new curriculum is in place, pupils are inspired by the challenges it offers.Whaplode Primary, Lincolnshire - Ofsted Report, October 2010

Starting a new curriculum is not easy. The EdisonLearning Connected Curriculum provides a solution that is 'ready to use' yet is fully flexible and adaptable to meet the needs and contexts of your school and learners.

The Connected Curriculum is a structured framework of half termly themed Learning Units for each primary school year group. It covers Foundation subjects and Science and is fully mapped to cover the National Curriculum requirements leaving you with peace of mind over statutory coverage of the orders.

Our approach is designed to get 'teachers' creative juices flowing' whilst providing them with the support and framework that is needed for a consistently delivered and planned whole-school curriculum. Robust coverage of the National Curriculum is, of course, vital, but what we really want is for learners and teachers to go home everyday excited and buzzing about their day.

“We did some fairly extensive research looking at different companies that provided models for a more creative curriculum, we even trialled one! We found that many of the models left ‘gaps’ or didn’t include subjects within the National Curriculum. EdisonLearning does all this. In addition, it gives us supporting documentation to enable our Subject Leaders to be confident in the coverage AND progression throughout the National Curriculum Programmes of Study.

Many schools have been 'caught between the curriculum reviews' and are waiting to change their approach. If you are tired of the QCA Unit approach and are looking for an exciting starting point to create a new curriculum in your school, this could be for you. Schools that we have worked with have felt reassured that when the time comes for a curriculum change or review from government, that their curriculum will still be fit for purpose. If any re-mapping needs to be done as a result of new requirements, it is all part of our service.

We know that schools can struggle to find the time and capacity to plan and develop a curriculum that links the subjects in a robust and meaningful way so let us help you!

QHow will subject leaders monitor their Curriculum across the school?

AThe adoption of an integrated curriculum does present challenges for subject coordinators and requires that new ways of working are developed. The extensive curriculum documentation provides support to assist subject leaders.

QDoesn't this mean a huge amount of planning for our teachers?

AThe curriculum is a suggested framework to support teachers. It is not prescriptive, and the ideas do not have to be slavishly followed. However, the Integrated Learning Units provide comprehensive medium term plans from which teachers can draw their short term plans. Schools are encouraged to take ownership of the curriculum over time by developing it further to suit their particular pupils' needs and school context.
