Core Learning Skills

How do you develop the essential skills for learning and life?

The EdisonLearning Primary Core Learning Skills Curriculum intentionally and systematically develops pupils’ personal learning and life skills. These skills include the social and emotional aspects of learning and 'Every Child Matters' outcomes, which develops pupils’ ability to learn more effectively and results in increased motivation, raised standards and accelerated progress.

The Primary Core Learning Skills Curriculum supports the EdisonLearning Primary Connected Curriculum (or any creative subject curriculum).

What are the Core Learning Skills?

  • Learning with Others
  • Developing Independence & Responsibility
  • Improving Own Learning Performance
  • Developing a Sense of self Worth & an Understanding of Self & Others
  • Thinking Skills
  • Speaking & Listening

These strands are supported by the Core Learning Skills Framework which encompasses banks of ‘I Can’ statements which are designed to be used as learning objectives / targets which clarify what the skills are in order to enable progression.

Pupils are additionally taught thinking skills that help them to see how an activity helps them in many ways, for example academically by improving their speaking and listening, or socially by developing their respect for others.

The high levels of these skills for their age mean that the pupils are exceptionally well prepared for the next stage in their education."
